What is Material Safety Data Sheet?
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) contain printed material concerning safe use and potential hazards as prescribed by law. The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration Hazard Communication 1910.1200 requires that manufacturers obtain or develop an MSDS for each chemical they produce or import. As a result, employers must have an MSDS binder in the workplace. Employees also need to know that there is an MSDS binder readily accessible. The overall mission of OSHA is to prevent work related injuries, illnesses, and deaths by issuing and enforcing standards for workplace safety and health.
The MSDS contains information on a product used in the workplace. At the top of each sheet, manufacturer contact data and product information is listed. Next, the chemical components of each product are listed, along with their Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Numbers (CAS). The American Chemical Society catalogs all chemicals by using a CAS number for reference. Finally, each MSDS contains information including physical and chemical data (melting point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, handling, storage, disposal, and spill cleanup procedures. This is all meant to give the employer or employee specific information for safe use of the product in the workplace.
It is important to note that each MSDS may be slightly different, and that some products do not require an MSDS sheet.
Why do I need MSDS information?
As stated above, OSHA requires employers to have an MSDS binder in the workplace. Likewise, employees shall know that there is an MSDS readily accessible in the workplace. OSHA Hazard Communication 29CFR 1910.1200(g)(8) states “Electronic access, microfiche, and other alternatives to maintaining paper copies of the MSDS sheets are permitted as long as no barriers to immediate employee access in each workplace are created by such options.” This is why the Endodontic Material Safety Data Sheet Database has been created.
What is the Endodontic Material Safety Data Sheet Database?
The Endodontic Material Safety Data Sheet (EndoMSDS) Database is a searchable online database listing of endodontically related Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
What is the purpose of the EndoMSDS Database?
This database compiles and organizes endodontically related MSDS sheets. The database is then searchable through manufacturer, distributor, category, product, and keyword. MSDS sheets are available in Public Document Format (.pdf) for viewing and printing. In addition, links to the manufacturer and distributor websites are presented for further information on each product.
How do I search the EndoMSDS Database?
Endomsds.com has several different ways to search for a product. Enter a keyword and hit the ‘search’ tab. Or, try a search alphabetically. Also, drop-down menu searching will find a product based on manufacturer, distributor, or category. Likewise, all products available by manufacturer or distributor can be searched for. The same holds true for items available in each category.
I have MSDS sheets for my products in my office. Why should I use this site?
The database is meant as an adjunct to the required MSDS portfolio per OSHA. Although the database does not contain all possible product MSDS sheets, one could use EndoMSDS.com as their primary endodontic MSDS portfolio if all products used by the provider are listed in the archive. Electronic guidelines allow MSDS sheets to be stored electronically, so long as the office can easily access each MSDS. In effect, the online MSDS reference offers one additional area in which the office can become paperless.
Endomsds.com is also an excellent resource for those wanting more information on endodontic products, tip-cards, instructions, and techniques. Each product has a direct web-link to the manufacturer’s website. Additionally, most distributors are listed for ordering information. Those products with multiple distributors, however, do not have a direct distributor link at this time.
What are the endodontic categories used by EndoMSDS.com?
General endodontic categories include:
Will I find each and every endodontic MSDS sheet in the database?
No. The MSDS sheets included in this database are the ones reviewed and approved by EndoMSDS.com. The administrators work to include as many endodontically-related MSDS sheets as possible.
I have found an MSDS sheet that I think would be helpful to EndoMSDS.com. How do I submit this?
Thank you for your input! The administrators are always looking for new manufacturers, distributors, products, and MSDS sheets. Please email info@endomsds.com with suggestions.
